Our 4 legged friends need a little special treat every now and then also. We usually buy Reno’s puppy treats from Walmart or the grocery store. Some he loves (bacon!), and some he turns his nose up at. After reading the ingredients on the side of the box, we decided to try a recipe for Homemade puppy treats with better ingredients which are so much healthier for our little pup. I made this recipe as it was written, before reading the comments on the post. The next batch I make, I will substitute healthier options.
Please remember guys, these are TREATS this is not his dog food. And even in dogs certain foods in moderation is ok for them. I am not a VET and I don’t claim to be an expert on puppy treats or puppy nutrition. This version of the home made treats is perfectly healthy for our friendly canines. If you are concerned with the ingredients please consult your regular veterinarian.
While I was mixing up the treat dough, Reno was in and out of the kitchen like I was cooking a steak or something. I’m sure it was the delicious aroma of the peanut butter through the entire kitchen. It really did smell so good. Once I got the puppy treats in the oven, it intensified x 10 LOL. Reno would walk over by the stove, sniff around a bit, walk over to me with that look “C’mon mom! I know those are mine, why aren’t you getting them already!!!!”
I really do wish we could read their little puppy minds sometimes. The things we would hear!
Here is how we made them…
Homemade Puppy Treats!
- 3 Cups flour (substitute oat or wheat flour for healthier option)
- 1 Cup Filtered or bottled water
- 1/2 Cup Peanutbutter (natural is best – no sugar)
- 2 Tablespoons oil (Substitute unsweetened apple sauce for healthier alternative)
Mix together all ingredients in a medium size bowl. This mix is very dry and is suppose to be, using your hands to get a good mix is highly recommended. Mixing up this dough gives your arms a great workout! Feel the burn! ?
Grease a cookie sheet – I used olive oil – and press the dough into the pan to about 1/4 – 1/2 inch thick.
Cut your puppy treats in cute fun shapes, or just give them a slice with a sharp knife BEFORE cooking.
Bake in your 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. Let them cool completely before feeding to the pup. Break into shapes or pieces and enjoy!

Reno LOVED these treats! I let him have 2 last night since he was such a good boy and patient with the cooling time. I’m sure it just tortured his cute little puppy nose smelling the wonderful aroma of the peanut butter puppy treats! We are sending some to his puppy cousin Abby this month for her to try! We will let you know what Abby thinks of the puppy treats too!
Do you make your own puppy treats? I’m curious to find other recipes our little heathen …. I mean sweet pup can try out!
